On the front chest, the jacket features the iconic Iron Mike statue from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. The statue, officially titled Crusading for Right (1918), honors the Marines of the 2nd Division who fought at the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918. Iron Mike has long stood as a symbol of Marine courage, sacrifice, and the moment the Marine Corps earned its legendary reputation on the battlefields of World War I.
Across the back, a bold, weathered graphic carries the phrase “Stacking Bodies Since Belleau Wood, France”—a raw nod to the brutal fighting that took place in the wheat fields and forests of Belleau Wood. Beginning on 6 June 1918, U.S. Marines advanced across nearly 300 yards of open ground under devastating German machine-gun fire. Maxim guns cut down rows of Marines, yet the line never broke. Fighting continued for weeks in vicious close combat—rifles, grenades, and bayonets in the tangled woods.
By the end of the battle in June 1918, the Marines of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments had seized the forest after repeated German counterattacks, suffering thousands of casualties but cementing their reputation for relentless assault and battlefield tenacity. German forces reportedly referred to them as Teufel Hunden—Devil Dogs.
