    Short. Direct. Operational.

    Historical Background

By July 1918, German forces launched a massive offensive along the Marne River in a final attempt to split Allied lines and force a negotiated peace.

The American 3rd Infantry Division held critical river crossings near Château-Thierry.

Under intense artillery bombardment and repeated infantry assaults, the division refused to give ground.

    They held.

    They repulsed.

The stand along the Marne earned the 3rd Division its permanent nickname:

    “Rock of the Marne.”

From that moment forward, the strategic initiative shifted to the Allies.

The Marne was not merely a defensive stand.

It marked the beginning of sustained American offensive momentum that would carry through Saint-Mihiel, Blanc Mont, and the Meuse-Argonne.
