HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Rock of the Marne Battlefield Coordinate Cap
Embroidered on the side of this cap are the precise coordinates of a battlefield where American soldiers held the line during one of the most critical moments of the First World War.
49º2'37.963" N
3º23'53.785" E
These coordinates mark the site of the 3rd Infantry Division memorial near the Marne River in France, honoring the soldiers who earned the name “Rock of the Marne.”
In July of 1918, during the Second Battle of the Marne, German forces launched a massive offensive in a final attempt to break the Allied line. Along the banks of the Marne River, soldiers of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division held their positions against relentless attacks.
Wave after wave of German forces advanced.
The Americans did not move.
Their defense along the Marne became one of the defining moments of the war and helped stop the German advance. For their unshakable stand, the division earned the name that would follow them for generations:
Rock of the Marne.
Today a memorial stands near the river where that stand was made, honoring the soldiers who refused to give ground.
The coordinates on this cap mark the exact location of that memorial and the battlefield where the line held.
Part of the Belleau Wood 1918 Battlefield Coordinate Series, this hat honors the places where history was written and the Americans who fought there.
Some ground is more than just land.
It is hallowed.
