HISTORICAL CONTEXT

MEUSE–ARGONNE
Meuse–Argonne Offensive – 26 September 1918

Before dawn on 26 September 1918, American forces launched the largest offensive in the history of the United States Army.

More than one million soldiers of the American Expeditionary Forces advanced into the Argonne Forest and along the Meuse River in northeastern France. The terrain was some of the worst on the Western Front.

Dense woods. Ravines. Mud. Barbed wire. Concrete machine-gun nests.

German forces had spent four years fortifying the ground.

As the attack began, artillery thundered across the entire front. Infantry moved forward through fog and shattered forest while German machine guns and artillery opened fire.

Progress was slow and brutal.

Units became separated in the tangled terrain. Supplies struggled to reach the front. Yet the advance continued day after day through relentless fighting.

The offensive would last forty-seven days and cost the Americans over 120,000 casualties.

But by early November, the German line had broken.

The Meuse–Argonne Offensive helped force Germany to seek an armistice, bringing the First World War to an end.
