Marne
France | July 1918
In July 1918 German forces launched a massive offensive along the Marne River in a final attempt to break the Allied line before American power could fully arrive in France.
Along the river near Château-Thierry, the soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division held the line. Refusing orders to withdraw, they stood their ground under relentless artillery and repeated German assaults.
The division repulsed every attack.
Their stand prevented the Germans from crossing the Marne and breaking through the Allied front.
From that battle the 3rd Infantry Division earned the name that would follow it through history.
Rock of the Marne.
The German advance had been stopped, and the tide of the war began to turn.
