HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Hill 142 – Belleau Wood Sector | 6 June 1918

On the morning of 6 June 1918, U.S. Marines of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment advanced across an open wheat field toward a low rise known as Hill 142, just outside the woods of Belleau. German machine guns were already dug into the tree line and trench positions overlooking the field.

With little cover, the Marines moved forward through waist-high wheat under devastating fire. Units took heavy casualties almost immediately. Officers and NCOs were struck down leading from the front, yet the advance did not stop.

Marines closed the distance with rifle fire, grenades, and bayonets, pushing into the German positions and seizing the hill in brutal close combat. The cost was staggering.

More Marines were killed or wounded that day than in any previous battle in Marine Corps history.

Hill 142 marked the opening clash of what would become the Battle of Belleau Wood a fight that forged the reputation of the Marines in France and gave rise to the legend of the “Devil Dogs.”

The ground was taken.
But it was paid for in blood.

Hill 142 stands today as the first step in the Marine assault that would turn Belleau Wood into one of the most sacred battlefields in Marine Corps history.

Honor the legacy of the American Expeditionary Forces 1918.
