HISTORICAL CONTEXT
HILL 142
Battle of Belleau Wood – 6 June 1918
At dawn on 6 June 1918, U.S. Marines of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 2nd Division
advanced across an open wheat field toward a rise known as Hill 142, just west of Belleau Wood.
German forces had prepared the ground carefully.
Machine guns were dug into the tree line and trench positions overlooking the field.
The Marines would have to cross nearly 400 yards of open terrain with almost no cover.
As they stepped forward into the wheat, the German guns opened.
Maxim machine guns swept the field. Marines fell in rows, but the line did not break.
Officers and NCOs were struck down leading from the front, yet the advance continued.
Rifle fire. Grenades. Bayonets.
The Marines closed the distance and fought into the German positions, seizing the hill
in brutal close combat.
The cost was enormous.
More Marines were killed or wounded on that day than in any battle in the history
of the Marine Corps up to that point.
Hill 142 was the opening clash of the Battle of Belleau Wood, a fight that would forge
the reputation of the American Marines in France and give rise to the legend of the Devil Dogs.
The ground was taken.
But it was paid for in blood.
Honor the legacy of the American Expeditionary Forces 1918.
