HISTORICAL CONTEXT
ST. MIHIEL SALIENT
Battle of Saint-Mihiel – 12 September 1918
Before dawn on 12 September 1918, the American Expeditionary Force under General John J. Pershing launched its first major independent offensive of the First World War against the German-held Saint-Mihiel salient, a fortified bulge in the Allied line south of Verdun.
For nearly four years German forces had held the position, threatening vital French rail lines and supply routes. The sector was heavily defended with trenches, artillery positions, and belts of barbed wire that had resisted earlier Allied attacks.
More than 3,000 artillery guns opened fire across the front as rain and mud covered the battlefield. When the barrage lifted, American infantry and tanks advanced through shattered trenches and wire.
The German line quickly collapsed.
Within thirty-six hours, the salient that had existed since 1914 was erased. American forces captured over 15,000 German prisoners, hundreds of artillery pieces, and large quantities of equipment.
Saint-Mihiel marked the first major offensive conducted entirely by the United States Army and Marines and proved the American Expeditionary Force had arrived in strength.
The ground was taken.
