This hoodie marks the ground where the American Expeditionary Forces launched their first offensive of the First World War.
Before dawn on 28 May 1918, the soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division, known as the Big Red One, stepped forward behind a rolling wall of American artillery. Their objective was a shattered farming village called Cantigny.
The advance carried them through shell torn fields, smashed orchards, and into streets already reduced to rubble. German machine guns opened from hidden trench lines and fortified cellars.
The village fell by mid morning.
Then the real fight began.
For the next three days German forces launched repeated counterattacks to retake the ground.
Artillery. Gas. Assault.
The Americans held.
Cantigny was a small village on a French hillside, but its meaning echoed across the entire Western Front.
It proved something the Allies desperately needed to know.
American troops could attack.
American troops could take ground.
American troops could hold it.
From that moment forward the American Expeditionary Forces were no longer arriving in France to learn war.
They were fighting it.
Honor the legacy of the American Expeditionary Forces 1918.
