HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Blanc Mont Ridge Battlefield Coordinate Cap

Embroidered on the side of this cap are the coordinates of one of the most important battlefields in the history of the United States Marine Corps.

Blanc Mont Ridge, France

In October 1918, Marines of the 2nd Division, American Expeditionary Forces, were ordered to seize the heavily fortified heights of Blanc Mont Ridge during the final phase of the First World War.

The ridge was the key to the German defensive line in the Champagne sector.
Machine guns, artillery, and fortified positions dominated the ground.

The Marines attacked anyway.

Advancing through tangled wire, shell craters, and relentless fire, they fought their way up the slopes and across the ridge in brutal close combat.

The fighting was savage and costly, but by the end of the battle the ridge was in American hands and the German line was broken.

49º17'2.731" N 4º32'10.39" E

These coordinates mark the monument at Blanc Mont Ridge, located near the ground where American forces broke through the German trench line and secured the heights.

Today Blanc Mont Ridge stands as one of the most important victories of the American Expeditionary Forces and one of the defining battles in Marine Corps history.

The coordinates on this cap mark the exact ground where that breakthrough occurred.

Part of the Belleau Wood 1918 Battlefield Coordinate Series, this hat honors the locations where history was written and the Marines who fought there.

Some ground is more than just land.

It is hallowed.
