On 6 June 1918, Marines stepped off across open ground under interlocking German fire. No cover. No concealment. Just distance to close.

They crossed the wheat.

Rifles up. Bayonets fixed.

The wood was not a forest. It was shattered timber, splintered trunks, tangled wire, and reinforced machine gun nests dug into limestone and root systems.

Fighting was measured in yards.
Grenades. Bayonets. Rifle butts. Hand to hand inside broken tree lines.

The line bent. It did not break.

Hill 142 taken.
Bouresches seized.
The wood cleared tree by tree.

Counterattacks came daily.
The position was held.

When it was over, the ground was renamed.

Bois de la Brigade de Marine.

From this fight came a name the enemy gave in respect.

Teufel Hunden.
Devil Dogs.
