BELLEAU WOOD MARINE MONUMENT (BLACK INK) | WWI AEF ICONS SERIES | BELLEAU WOOD 1918™ | T SHIRT
Pattern 1918 Field Specification.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This design honors the Belleau Wood monument located within the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France. The bronze relief, set against a black marble stele, was created by renowned sculptor Felix de Weldon, who later designed the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The sculpture depicts a Marine in intense forward motion, rifle gripped and bayonet fixed, capturing the close-quarters fighting that defined June 1918.
During the battle, the 4th Marine Brigade, composed of the 5th and 6th Regiments, suffered more than 8,100 casualties while halting the German advance toward Paris in what was then the largest and costliest battle in Marine Corps history.
In recognition of their tenacity, the French officially renamed the forest
Bois de la Brigade de Marine
