HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Soissons Battlefield Coordinate Cap
Embroidered on the side of this cap are the coordinates of one of the most decisive battlefields of the First World War.
Soissons, France
In July 1918, American forces launched a powerful counteroffensive against German positions near the city of Soissons during what would become known as the Second Battle of the Marne.
Among the units leading the attack was the 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, advancing across open ground against heavily fortified German positions.
Machine guns, artillery, and entrenched defenders dominated the battlefield.
The Americans attacked anyway.
Through relentless fire and brutal close combat, they pushed forward and broke through the German defensive lines. The success of the attack at Soissons marked the beginning of a massive Allied counteroffensive that would ultimately drive German forces back across France.
It was one of the first moments the world witnessed the growing strength of the American Expeditionary Forces.

These coordinates mark the location of the 1st Division Monument at Soissons, commemorating the soldiers who fought and fell during the battle and the breakthrough that helped turn the tide of the war.
The coordinates on this cap mark the exact ground where that legacy stands today.
Part of the Belleau Wood 1918 Battlefield Coordinate Series, this hat honors the locations where history was written and the Americans who fought there.
Some ground is more than just land.
It is hallowed.
