Belleau Wood 1918 Battlefield Coordinate Cap

These coordinates mark the location of the Iron Mike statue at Belleau Wood, France, standing near the heart of the battlefield where United States Marines fought one of the fiercest battles of the First World War.

In June of 1918, Marines of the 2nd Division, American Expeditionary Forces, advanced across the wheat fields outside the forest of Belleau directly into German machine-gun fire. The fighting that followed inside the woods became savage and relentless — fought tree to tree with rifles, grenades, and bayonets.

By the end of the battle the Germans had given the Marines a name that would follow them for the next century:

Teufel Hunden — Devil Dogs.

Today the Iron Mike statue stands as a silent guardian of that ground.
