HISTORICAL CONTEXT

BLANC MONT RIDGE
Battle of Blanc Mont
3–8 October 1918

On 3 October 1918, U.S. Marines of the 2nd Division attacked the fortified heights of Blanc Mont Ridge in the Champagne region of France. The ridge formed a critical part of the German defensive line protecting the approaches to the Meuse-Argonne sector.

German forces had spent years preparing the position. Machine guns, artillery, trenches, and deep dugouts covered the high ground. The Marines would have to advance across open terrain and fight uphill into well-prepared defenses.

Before dawn the assault began.

Under heavy artillery and machine gun fire, the Marines pushed forward through shattered trenches and belts of barbed wire. The battle quickly turned into brutal close combat as the Americans fought through German strongpoints and repeated counterattacks.

After days of hard fighting, Blanc Mont Ridge was finally secured.

The battle became one of the bloodiest engagements fought by U.S. Marines in the First World War. The capture of the ridge shattered a major German defensive position and helped drive the enemy back toward final defeat.

The ground was taken.
