Before dawn the 2nd Division stepped off without preparatory bombardment. No warning. No softening.
Open wheat fields. Rolling ground. German machine guns dug in along the heights.
Marines and soldiers advanced in waves.
Rifles up. Bayonets fixed.
Ground taken at a run.
Soissons was the objective.
The German advance toward Paris was broken here.
This was maneuver under fire. Speed over hesitation. Shock over delay.
The momentum shifted on 18 July.
This shirt marks the sector where the counterstroke landed.
