German forces crossed the Marne under cover of darkness and artillery. Bridges seized. Assault waves pushing forward.
The 3rd Infantry Division did not withdraw.
Along the riverbanks and through shattered villages, American soldiers held their ground under direct fire. Machine guns anchored the line. Artillery answered. Counterattacks launched at close range.
Units on the flanks fell back.
The 3rd stayed.
The German advance broke against the line at the Marne.
From that stand came the name.
Rock of the Marne.
This shirt marks the ground where the line did not move.
Not a tribute.
